I started to cry in Walmart today.....

Which I know is totally pathetic. I was in Walmart on Monday and milk was $2.68 a gallon. Not too bad....
Today it was $3.83 a gallon! That's a $1.15 price increase. That's insane! Milk is a staple in almost every household. It shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

On top of that, I live in Alabama where our tax rate is 10% on everything! So that gallon of milk is really $4.21.

But, I know that Aldi's sells their milk for $1.98 a gallon. (You can go here and see if they are in your area.) and that is where I usually buy mine. We saw milk this high when gas was $4 a gallon. I hope this isn't a sign of what is to come......

I'm sorry.. our milk has been over $3/gallon again for awhile now. But I do live in FL where we do not pay sales tax on groceries.. maybe thats why we don't get to double our coupons.. I know we go through alomost 4 gallons a week...

I hope you had your Wal-mart price-match that Aldi's price for milk. That's how I usually get the best price without driving to a store for one item, especially if it's a non-coupon.

As the wife of a dairy farmer, I never complain about milk prices. I know right now that farmers are receiving the same amount for their milk that they were earning 30 years ago! Farmers are paid only $13 per hundred weight (yep, 100 pounds of milk) and right now it costs more than that to produce it. The middle-man is making all the money. Just thought I'd give your post a little perspective.

I haven't done it but I have heard you can freeze milk. If you have the freezer space I'd stock up when it's on sale so you don't have to buy it when it's so high. And start looking for coupons. Silly as it sounds I'm in CA and they have .50 coupon in PDF form that's good until Jan 31st. I'm hoping they put another coupon out then.

Oh wow that is expensive. I bought milk the other day for like 2.08$ I think here in Wisconsin. Of course at Walmart.
I really hope it doesnt rise because my 2 yr old son goes through 2% milk sooo fast

Thought I would share that I just returned from Disneyworld. It was an amazing trip. If you are planning on buying any souveniers or anything in the stores I got a coupon.

We used Disney's Dining plan and ate at the COlumbia Harbor House in Magic Kingdom for Quick Service as well as Buzz's Pizza Planet in Hollywood Studios as well as Cosmic Rays in Magic Kingdom. Each place gave me a 20% off coupon to use in several stores throughout the parks and downtown disney. I saved up all my shopping and did it in 1 big swoop to use my coupon.

I don't know where you live in Alabama, but the Whole Foods in Birmingham always prices milk - hormone free, btw - as a loss leader. It's always around 2.89/gallon. Of course if you have to drive out of your way to get there, you end up saving no money, but for what it's worth.

And yes, you can freeze milk. One of my kids' former babysitters used to do it all the time.

Milk in Hawaii is $9.68 no joke.
MN it is $1.75

I miss Aldi! We moved from Michigan to Utah and there's no Aldi here. I once got milk at Aldi for 99 cents a gallon. Those were the days.... I've heard you can buy extra when it's on sale and freeze it. Is that true?

Milk prices are really a shame. My sister-in-law and her family are dairy farmers, and it's disgusting how little they make on their milk compared to how much we pay at the store.
I live in PA where the minimum price of milk is government controled, and the dairy farmers can still barely get by.

If you get a chance to shop at Aldi, LOTS of other things are 1/2 the price of the regular grocery store as well, even without coupons! (Eggs = $1.25) I save enough on my weekly grocery bill just by shopping there to make it worth it, AND there's no coupon hassles. My family of 5 in NC eats every week for under $60. Some of their "off-brand" items are better than the name brands! AND a lot of their products are made with real sugar instead of HFCS which is much healthier for my sweet-toothed 2-year-old! (I should become the Aldi spokesperson... ;)

This is some awesome feedback guys! I have the tiniest deep freeze they make. I plan to upgrade to a larger one in the spring. I'll have to get a new fridge too because mine is leaking.

I just get so upset for people who don't know how to save like we do. Like my MIL who is barely making ends meet.

In PA there is a state minimum price on milk, I think to help dairy farmers. The good thing is that you can get milk pretty much anywhere for the same price, the bad news is there are never any great deals. The price can vary week to week, but everyone has it the same. Usually 2% is $3-4, although I hardly bother checking the price since I'll buy it anyway.

Milk is pretty low here in UT... I went to our most expensive store (UtahDealDiva did a comparison) since it is the closest to me and I think the generic was $1.98 for 1/2 gallon and $2.15 for a gallon (I drink skim)... I buy the gallon, even though I can't use it all, since it is the better deal if I drink more than 1/2...

BUT we cannot double coupons here AND we pay tax (3%-6%) on ALL items, BEFORE coupons...

Who knows, maybe our state subsidizes milk...

The sales tax thing is not why coupons can't double. I'm in Indiana. We don't pay tax on groceries. We have a three stores in my area that double...
And on the milk thing, I think I will stop drinking milk if it reaches $4 here... :) I would cry too...

That is really expensive!! I picked up a half gallon on Saturday (didn't make it to Aldi's) and where I am it was $2!

I wouldn't mind paying it - if the farmers got more. I live in upstate NY (real upstate) - and it's farm country.

But hope it isn't a sign of things to come... yet gas for us is just under $3/gallon.

The sad part is, dairy farmers are still earning the same about of money for their milk as my grandparents did when they got rid of their dairy farm in 1990. Almost twenty years have gone by, prices have gone up in regards to EVERYTHING and dairy farmers are still getting the same price for their milk as TWENTY YEARS AGO!!

I live in NH. 2% Milk fluctuates around $3 give or take depending on where you shop. This is a tax free state, we don't pay tax on groceries or anything retail. There is an 8% tax when you eat at a restaurant but that's it. I have lived here my whole life and I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to buy $100 dollars worth of groceries and then be told to pay $110 at the check out! YIKES!

Milk is under 2$ here right now. I remember paying more than that 10 years ago. It is hurting the dairy farmers in the area. All of the grocery prices have gone up considerably with the rise in gas costs. Unfortunately, most did not come down as the gas price did. We just barely make ends meet, even with my savings. Three boys get expensive. Your blog helps up more than you could ever imagine. There is just no grocery competition here and every little bit helps. For what it is worth, WalMart is definitely not the cheapest in my area. In fact, i usually have to pay more. Maybe you should check into other stores. I think people automatically think it is cheaper because it is WalMart but i have learned the opposite.

Try Florida. Milk is generally over $3 per gallon. If a store is offering a gallon of milk as a loss leader it might go down to $2.89/gal. Walgreens and Target offer milk as a loss leader at least once a month.

Sam’s Club and Costco price milk about $2.50, but you have to factor in the cost of annual membership and how much other shopping you do there.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm over in Pinson and was going to Walmart for milk this week...I guess I'm giong to Aldi!

My grandfather drinks at least 1 gallon of milk a day and his brand (he will not switch) costs over $4+tax all the time (it varies from 4.19-4.79)! That's why I coupon, so we can afford to buy his milk!

I've been using that Over the Moon milk coupon (it's pdf) for $1 off and I get 1/2 gallon for $1 at Walmart. It comes in chocolate or white. My kids LOVE it! I hope they put out another one when this one expires in Jan. I live in Mississippi and we pay 7% tax on everything before coupons!
